The Ring of Fire

Indonesia’s Spice Islands, also known as the Ring of Fire, are the epicenter of marine biodiversity. It was here that Welsh naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace developed his evolutionary theory in 1858. Mr. Wallace detailed his findings to friend Charles Darwin who also advanced similar conclusions in the Galapagos, and thus the Theory of Evolution was born.

Today the ancient jungles of Maluku are still fragrant with the alluring scent of nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. And, just below those remote volcanic islands, the Banda Seas’ pristine water harbors astounding marine-life aggregations that have only recently been discovered. Join us for an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Coral Triangle, you won’t be disappointed.

Alpha Expeditions will be leading three epic adventures through the Ring of Fire during Fall 2022. These 8-10 day expeditions are focused on scuba diving some of the most remote and exciting reefs anywhere on earth.

We will be cruising unsullied waters in a luxurious vessel as it affords the best opportunity to encounter the area’s magnificent wildlife. In addition, there will be opportunities to regain your landlegs and explore the region’s rich history, authentic villages and a well-preserved Dutch fort.

Curious about the marine-life? Some incredible animals you are likely to encounter include: huge schools of hammerheads and barracuda, mobula rays, silky sharks, turtles, mandarin fish, the elusive Rhinopias, and even whale sharks! This, of course, is in addition to immaculate coral reefs, the likes of which you’ve never experienced, and an abundance of fishes.

Quick facts:

  • 76% (605) of the world’s coral species, highest diversity in the world.

  • 37% (2,228) of the world’s coral reef fish species, highest diversity in the world.

The rooms may be smaller than at home, but no detail was spared. The boat’s crew is exceptional and will ensure complete satisfaction. Daily room service is provided and laundering is also available.

We are able to accommodate virtually all dietary restrictions, however certain foods are not readily available as in your home country. Occasionally our meals will be of the local variety; that’s part of the fun!

During our eight to ten day adventure through remote sections of the Banda Sea, we may encounter some swell. Generally speaking it is quite minimal, but there can be swaying from time to time! The nature of this voyage is such that, outside our vessel, we will probably not meet other travelers along the way. Ample support, guidance, and lively conversation will provided by your cruise director and local guide.
